Cheyenne was established during the summer of 1867. Quickly, the temporary tents gave way to more permanent structures, housing businesses, churches, and homes as well as Fort D.A. Russell and Camp Carlin. The citizens of the new city welcomed the all-important Union Pacific Railroad on November 13, 1867. Wyoming's first territorial governor, John A. Campbell, designated Cheyenne as the new territory's capital and the city's future was secured.
